Barbara Schey - Shibori Now!

Students may work on silk, pure cotton, polyester or handmade paper. They will explore many different techniques and produce work suitable for everything from patchwork, through fashion, to bookbinding. Discharge, meltoff and degum may sound strange to beginners, however students will become familiar with these terms by the end of the course.

You will be learning to make pieces of nuno felt by combining merino wool tops and tissue silk. These are then assembled in Catherine's unique way to make a garment that will be one-of-a-kind.

Claire Brach - Meddling with metals

Focusing on incorporating thin metal shim, metal mesh and wire into our artworks we will cut, stitch, manipulate, emboss and heat brass, copper and aluminium shim to add focal interest. We will also cover layering, metal and wire weaving, coiling and various colouring techniques including painting, wax rubbing and alcohol ink staining.

Using a firm background we will apply fabrics and metals to produce a project suitable for a wall hanging, covered box lid, journal cover, bag feature, or even wearable adornments. Some hand embroidery will also be featured. Don't be daunted, this will be a fun class!!

Join noted American art jeweller Keith Lo Bue on an energetic exploration of unusual and unexpected materials in jewellery making.

In this class you will be making leather bound books and book cloth boxes. The workshop will include sewing a book, making your own endpapers, rounding and backing, paring leather, making a strop, covering in leather on 5 raised bands and some finishing - eg titling.

Tricia Smout - designing with letters

Give a new twist to your artwork! In this workshop you will be shown a range of different techniques for creating innovative designs based on letters, words, symbols or numbers. You will create several unique patterns which are then ready to use later in your future projects. You can choose whether your message is very legible or more abstract, and we will discuss how to transfer the designs into your chosen medium (applique, embroidery, clay, paper, tapestry, knitting, crochet, weaving, silk painting, etc). No previous training in calligraphy or lettering is necessary, just the desire to express yourself creatively using letterforms!

Lesa Hepburn - Hand Papermaking Dimensions

Join Lesa to experience the pleasure of the vat and the exploration of new identities. You'll be hand papermaking from waste cotton rag pulp to create new visual identities in 2 & 3 dimensional forms ie artist books & vessels. Bring items such as old love letters or divorce documents which you may enjoy pulping, and of course your humour. You'll also be learning the process of laminating & embedding into the surface of the paper using a variation of cotton/silk threads , string, fabric offcuts old prints or memorabilia.
